Saudi Arabia Appoints Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has appointed Eng. Kamal Mohammed Al-Junaidi as the new Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In the presence of His Excellency Dr. Rumaih Al-Rumaih, Vice Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Acting President of the Transport General Authority, Eng. Al-Junaidi presented his credentials to His Excellency Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez of the IMO on the side-lines of the 133 Council Session at IMO HQ in London.


During the meeting, the delegation discussed the Kingdom’s vast contributions to the maritime industry, and built upon the strong collaboration and cooperative projects between Saudi Arabia and the IMO as well as reviewing key projects that Saudi Arabia supports at the organisation including the IMO CARES, and the upcoming Next Wave project.


Eng. Al-Junaidi holds 18 years of experience in maritime, transport, and international trade, and brings expertise in policymaking, operational optimisation, and strategic leadership within both public and private sectors. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Northumbria University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Hull. Complementing his formal education, he has earned a number of specialised certifications, including his Senior Marine Engineer Management credentials from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport and various operator and risk management certifications. In 2022, he completed the Maritime Transformation & Innovation Programme at Singapore’s MPA Academy, equipping him with insights into maritime innovation and regulatory compliance. Eng. Al-Junaidi has attended various IMO meetings over the years and acted as Head of Delegation before assentation into his new appointment.


Eng. Kamal Al-Junaidi’s blend of technical expertise, policy experience, and diplomatic acumen make him the ideal representative to support the Kingdom’s objectives in the IMO. His appointment reinforces Saudi Arabia’s dedication to active and meaningful participation in the global maritime community, as well as its commitment to advancing sustainable and secure maritime practices aligned with international standards.
