On the 24th and 25th June 2024, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the IMO will host the final event of the 2023 – 2024 IMOCARES project on the sidelines of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee’s 74th session. The event will bring over 30 delegates from the 4x countries chosen as part of the IMOCARES Marine Global Technology Challenge.
The event will also feature the announcements of the winning technology partners for the four countries featured in the project (St Kitts and Nevis, Namibia, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago). This event marks the final project of the IMOCARES project. The IMOCARES initiative is fully funded by the Kingdom in its efforts to bring global North and South together to reach the IMO’s GHG decarbonisation targets.
The concluding event of the IMO CARES project will provide a platform to showcase and discuss the project's activities, conduct technical meetings to finalize the Global Challenge Technical Proposals, and hold planning sessions to determine the next steps in the development of the CARES project.
The event will also showcase a number of presentations including a side event titled ‘Domestic Shipping and Decarbonisation in Developing Regions’ which brings together industry experts and stakeholders to discuss key issues facing decarbonisation in the maritime industry. The winners of the IMOCARES Marine Global Technology Challenge will be announced after this side event.
The IMOCARES Marine Global Technology Challenge, organised by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), is a pioneering competition targeting maritime technology providers worldwide. Participants were encouraged to propose cutting-edge solutions tailored to the specific needs of ports and domestic vessels in Africa and the Caribbean, ensuring their entries are suitable for deployment in the targeted countries within these regions. The winner of the challenge will have their project fully funded and receive support to collaboratively develop it alongside the IMO.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will continue to support initiatives like IMOCARES and the Marine Global Technology Challenge which seek to bring countries together in working towards a more sustainable future. The Marine Global Challenge will foster collaborative solutions to the big issues facing the maritime sector and ensure that no one is left behind in the path to decarbonisation.
